G’day All, The competition has finally come to an end. I would like to thank everyone for their submissions. The judging portion was a little chaotic due to many factors but we got there. I would like to congratulate the winner, Kevin Stemp for his story “Dead Proof” your story hit the mark with the top dog, so again congrats. The runner up is Sahith S Tiger for the “The Hunchback Killer”. For those who chose to sell their stories you will be contacted directly if chosen and those that opted out of the buy or anything less than first prize where removed after first prize was chosen. I’m not going to expand on the $10 buy price (you have had your say) except to mention it was an offer put forward so those who have never been published could have the option to see their work possibly in print and check that “bucket list item”. I wish you all the best in your writing careers and I hope you all find your muse in whatever dark form that manifests itself. Cheers David

DepartmentS has raised some great questions so... 1. The author/s will retains full IP of their work and is credited as author on publication (if published) 2. No sell-through rights are being granted to either MYSELF (David B) or the principals in agreeing to said sale. That said you are agreeing to not submit or reprint any stories bought. At the end of the day you can choose to sell or retain your stories for a better opportunity in the future. Cheers David

Magnificent - thank you for the clarification, David. Deeply appreciated. On those terms I'm certain most can happily find an accord. Hearty congratulations to the winner and thank you David for the opportunities proffered and hosting a delightful competition. Thoroughly enjoyed. Polite ripple of applause..... All the best, S : )

Ok, I admit I've spent a good deal of time in the UK, I've understood practically all of your Wodehouse slang terms, but 'pop up tea shop' is where I fail to grasp. Care to enlighten me?

A pop-up tea-shop? Imagine opening a small cafe in a friends kitchen - that's the basic the ethos of pop-up culture. It's a trend wherein the culinary gifted temporarily set-up shop for business in some out-of-the-way place, short term. It's a good thing. trust me.... : )

Thanks all for being patient, I have not received clarification for a winner so there has been an extension of 7 days to assist their decision. There will be no more submissions accepted. I was expecting a result today so it should be soon. Cheers David

Upload is open, Pat. Providing you keep the original entered and don't change the text of the version with new header information - I doubt anyone can complain about that. Give it a try.

Well if he didn't reject you and in you're in the judgement pool, then I doubt it should really matter. You could always just state the information in your entry private comments box, because he might automatically reject any new entry.

: )... Rocky. Given the low priced buyout option, I doubt it really matters even if the CH didn't like your writing style - providing what you have written retains the germ of a semi-cogent, saleable idea.

All good guys... A lot of subs that need to be read by 3 judges (myself included) so sit tight, a winner will be chosen in the next couple of days. Meanwhile if you wish to have the op to sell your story for the $10 offer you will need to make if available for a $10 buy price (nothing higher will be bought). Cheers David

Thank you S, and Patru for your insight. I was stating this in the case that the CH was willing to negotiate. After all, the only clause non-negotiable was the one that we can't use it for monetary gain. Also, because the CH was asking for our names and countries, I thought it might be possible that he is considering crediting the work to us. If as you say, the CH is not considering giving us any credit, then I would definitely not take up the offer.

Usually when a publisher offers a nominal fee like this all they're purchasing is the right to publish the work in whatever medium they publish in - the work itself remains the property of the original author. It's entirely conceivable the CH and his principals mean it in that context - however - Freelancer simply isn't set up to facilitate deals of that kind, as you know. Part and parcel of the transfer process is your agreement to sign over your IP Rights on your work - you can't receive payment until you do and they can't use the work in any context either. So, unless the buyout price offered increases significantly - indeed - retain your rights on your work. My regards to you, both. S : )

Instead of arguing about whether or not the contest holder, who has evidently not come online to freelancer ever since the contest finished, is being badgered, you might as well exchange to each other as to what your horror stories were actually about. That way at least, we could all get some useful information on the competition. Besides, no-one's going to steal your stories now. I'll start. My first horror story was a metafictional piece with a spiritual twist - a weird tale involving the reader as the protagonist in the horrors of their own mind. A bit long. My second was horror comedy, also metafictional, making a parody of common horror stereotypes. Anyone willing to share a gist, like this, of their story? If we're all going to be glancing at this page, it's probably the most new information we can get.

You - on the other-hand - have done nothing but aggressively demand the poor sod organizing this thing provide you personally with information he quite obviously doesn't as yet have - and yet you're calling other people "moron" for calling you on your conduct and politely asking you just to chill. Your perspective and behaviour here has been completely mono-centric, more than just a little bit amateurish and - forgive me - but where YOU get off calling other people moron based on your current behavior....? Some old saying about stones and glass houses here clearly comes to mind. Please, stop taking everything so personally. We are ALL in the same boat here. Contest Holder included. Just relax. There's no need for the way you're being. Contests like this one are a pleasure - supposed to be at least - learn how to appreciate it. Sincerely, I'm concerned. You appear waaaaay too uptight - like everything's riding on the outcome. It isn't, it's just a gig. There will be others. Be cool. S

Is it impossible for someone with a 10,000 word size to win? While you do accept novelettes, I'm wondering if you would be more likely to reject them.

Hi Sumikanth, As stated in the description "an exception Novelette (No more than 12000 words)" will be accepted, 10k word count is fine if the content flows. Ideally we are after 3000-6000 but 10k is not an extreme. I believe there is a novelette already in the anthology but primarily shorts. I look forward to reading you submission. I will be assessing the others today. Cheers david
