NASA Challenge: Astronaut Smartwatch App Interface Design.

  • Status: Closed
  • Prize: $1500
  • Entries Received: 150
  • Winner: igcalvo

Contest Brief

We (NASA) are interested in the emerging world of smartwatch technology and are looking to leverage this technology to create a smartwatch app that could be helpful to astronauts . The challenge is to design the general user interface for smart watch applications for use on the International Space Station.

Requirements and Guidelines: - Use the Samsung Gear S as a hardware reference for your design - Deliverables should be picture (PNG or JPEG) wireframes highlighting the unique design’s navigation, interaction, layout, look, feel, etc. - This design will be used for some of the following application. (See attachments for examples of all the current versions of these tools.):
1. Crew Timeline application - Will display an agenda view of the timeline as well as a way to easily navigate to another day in the past or future. Currently viewed on Laptop or iPad.
2. Caution & Warnings application - Will display color coded cautions and warnings
3. Communication Status application - Will display whether or not the vehicle is currently able to communicate with the ground through either voice/video
4. Timers application - Will be able to set timers for procedures or until next activity - Design should be for a single app with multiple functions (not separate apps). This general design should: - Direct attention to the appropriate information for a task and increase efficiency - Provide appropriate feedback to actions - Be legible on the smaller Samsung Gear screen - Innovative representations data displayed on a Smartwatch is highly encouraged.

Just a quick update on our judging phase.... we are very impressed with the turn out. Please note that with the extremely large number of submissions we will not be able to provide feedback on every post and especially those received at the last minute … etc. Judging of submitted entries is in progress and we should be able to announce the winner in the next few days. Thanks again for everyone's hard work.

@dustiiwolf On OSX Yosemite. Tried latest Safari and Chrome. Got endless hang or time outs on both. Network is solid. Tried OSX El Capitan on separate device to even quicker time out. Perhaps Firefox or Windows? Best.

I wish NASA take a chance of reviewing deadline lated challengers.
Dont misundertand me, I submitted mine well :)

I know this is a challenge game, so obeying deadline is also important.
But as a challenger, I don't care whether or not NASA take a review late ones, and give them a challgener title.

I hope mine will be chosen as WINNER among 237 entries, but more hopefully
I wish the really best one will be chosen not just from 237 ones, but from already-designed-but-a-little-late ones.

Why dose NASA avoid a chance for getting good motivation about UI? It's free.
I guess late challengers want to get theirs to be reviewd, not just to be winner.

And I think the possibility for just one specific UI one to be perfect is low. NASA can mix two or more design's PROS.

    Yeh its just my thought.

The best UI/UX would probably be a hybrid of multiple submissions - you are correct. Which is why this contest is such a great idea ;)

Hey guys, I am 16 and new at freelacer! I dont really understand why most of you have a rating or why i cant see your works? Is that normal? :D

    1. layaweek
      layaweek

Yea it's normal if the contest is sealed by a contest holder. That prevents others from copying your work because they can't see it either. If you didn't receive rating it means that a contest holder simply haven't yet rated your entry ;)

Hi, I've uploaded my submission but I had trouble with the interface of the site here. I think I may be missing a portion of my wireframes. Is it possible for me to reupload the additional files?

I just checked my upload and confirmed that it is indeed missing the remaining wireframes as well as the original unannotated versions. Please let me know if it is possible for me to provide them through Freelancer.com or some other means.

@nasacoeci: how does the rating system works? and also I can see some of the submission are in grey and some are in light yellow. Any specific reason behind this. Good luck to all the participants.

    1. PereViki

Hey guys, actually the grey ones are regular submissions, and the yellow ones have been highlighted by the submitting freelancer for $0.50. So the background of the boxes has nothing to do with rating. In addition, we will have to wait until the end of the submission phase of the contest and give some time to the contest holder to review all the entries in detail (might take several days even weeks), so they can select the winning entry/entries ('cause it is also possible to award more freelancers).
