Contest Brief

I need a cover design for a book I recently finished drafting entitled "Healing Grace." Here are some details:

Genres: Inspirational, Christian, health and healing, relationships, personal journey…

Topic: The overarching theme of the book is the power of God’s grace to heal our spirit, soul, body, and relationships. The book weaves together three things: the story of how God’s grace amazingly restored my relationship with my ex-wife, Diane, over ten years; the story of Diane’s journey facing pancreatic cancer; and the many things I learned about conventional, alternative, and supernatural forms of healing along the way.

Background: My wife divorced me over ten years ago following a 22.5-year marriage. I felt moved by God to focus only on my role in the demise of our marriage while extending unwavering grace to her in the years since. What happened over those ten years is truly remarkable. Many people have told me they have never heard a divorce story like mine. The experience was so powerful that I have committed my life to telling everyone about the realness, super power, practicality, impact, and beauty of God’s grace. This book does that.

Audience: Anyone who has ever experienced the pain of a broken relationship and/or of battling or watching someone battle a deadly disease. (Who among us hasn’t?)

Grace Definition: (1) Undeserved, unearned, and unwavering expressions of love, sacrifice, service, and forgiveness (a/k/a common grace). (2) In Christian belief, the free and unmerited favor of God that is ultimately expressed in the forgiveness of sins and eternal salvation for those who accept the sacrifice of Jesus Christ (a/k/a saving grace). (3) Simple elegance or refinement of movement.

Cover Design: First and foremost, the healing power of grace. This is not an easy thing to visualize. If this is too difficult, I would be happy with a super simple yet elegant/clever cover, even one with only the title. I’d like something truly special that will:

‒ Really “pop,” attract people’s attention, and draw them in.
‒ Something that would stand out among other books on a bookshelf.
‒ Be clean and elegant.
‒ Something that once people pick it up and read the text on the back, it draws them in further – without being overly wordy.

I’ll accept something more complex if it is breathtaking and/or it captures the theme of the book in an amazing way. I’m always telling people that grace is real, powerful, practical, impactful, and beautiful. Can you capture all (or most) of these in a cover design?

I don’t care about any words being on the cover except the title Healing Grace, and perhaps my name in much smaller font at the bottom.

Book Measures: While I haven’t made a final decision yet, I’m fairly certain the print cover dimensions will fall in the following range:

‒ Minimum: 5.75” by 8.75”
‒ Maximum: 6.25” by 9.25”

    Hey, all. More thanks for your work on this. I wanted to share something with you. Please go to just1book.com on the Web and look at the Grace image. I have been thinking for many years about how to visually represent grace, and this image is what I came up with at the time to visually represent the Grace chapter in the book. Maybe I should just use that image and wrap it around the cover. Thoughts?

    I wanted to type more, but hitting return posted the message below. Here's more feedback. First, this contest is hopefully a way that I can identify someone to work with on the final cover. It is not intended to get the perfect cover (unless something amazing happens). So, more work may follow. Second, given the amount of the award, it seems many people are grabbing a picture and slapping a font in it. An easy approach, but one that is unlikely to generate a really compelling cover. I would live to see more creativity. I may post a design document with some examples of covers I like to help you all. Stay tuned, and thanks again.

    Thanks to everyone who has submitted an entry. I didn't provide any guidance at first because I didn't want to stifle creativity. Here's some feedback: (1) I do NOT like script fonts; (2) I like fonts like Lato and variants. (3) I would like to avoid overt Christian images on the cover like crosses, people praying, etc.; (4) I would be happy with any type of design from a plain cover with the title only all the way up to something visually rich, but it's got to be clean, elegant, and innovative.

    Name is Ed Melick. I have mixed feelings about having a picture of a stranger on the cover. This could be an interesting approach if I had the right photo of Diane, but I don't think I do. Also, I'm not a fan of the swirling line. Where's the title?
