Contest Brief

Startup venture looking to design and build prototype toy robots. Experimental toys will explore autonomous robotic toys for children.

This AI robotic toy will be a small, cute and rugged autonomous vehicle. Around 20cm in size, these toys self-navigate around their environments. With cameras and microphones, the toys view, recognise and learn from the environment. These bots represent a contemporary technology form of the traditional wooden train set. The bots can drive around and follow user designed roads and railways, and explore buildings and landscapes.

Attached photos show an example wooden toy that give an indication of the overall design concept. For example, if a design like this was used, the toy would have 4 wheels, powered by battery, with a cpu running a mobile phone like collection of functionality such as camera (for taking photos and AI visual recognition of objects) and a microphone for listening to sound and processing using AI to learn further details. Lights on the rainbow could illuminate to feedback to the user what the robot is learning, perhaps flashing pink for heart, when it sees or hears a person, flashing green when it observes a new object, or blue when it is changing navigation course.

Ideally the toy would learn over time, similar to ancharacter in a computer game like the SIMS where it can grow in education as it sees amd hears new objects (eg. learns about plants, buildings, other toy objects), it can build a collection of friends where interactions increase relationship status and share knowledge. Ideally the toy would link to a mobile phone app, like a "tamagotchi" enabling the user to view more and control the toy like a remote controlled vehicle.

Being in the very early stages of product development, I am happy to consider both product design and user experience design submissions (from sketch illustrations through to 3d models) or also consider technical solution designs with manufacturing product recommendations and ideas for building the robot.

Looking forward to seeing any questions and your design ideas!

Hi all, seeing some awesome ideas! If anyone is interested, I am wondering if we could consider toy animal type forms. Like a (simplified) wooden echidna or pangolin.

I will be sure to get in touch with a few of you who have entered so far. Thanks for spending your time on ideas! I am looking forward to taking one or more of these ideas forward.

Hi Indranil, I have updated the description of the project which hopefully clarifies.

I am happy to receive any suggestions for design either product (3d / 2d / sketch) / visual / experience or technical solution design. I will be considering all aspects of this so feel free to focus on where you can be most helpful / maximum quality.

We are looking for product design concepts at this stage (eg. sketches or hand drawn illustrations, CAD illustration, digital artwork design, 3D model if preferred) but we will also be interested in technical design concepts.

While an initial focus is on the concept artwork, the technical solution and experience manufacturing similar robotics will be our next priority and we can take both submissions (design and tech) for this competition.

Product quality is paramount, however mindful that the end product would be expected to retail for approximately $200 USD. So expect to use out of the box componentry for robotics and our attention will be placed on the product design and user experience of playing with the toy.

This project is very early stage, so we are open to hearing different design concepts. We are looking for a toy product that would be compelling for approximately 8 to 13 year old children.
