Contest Brief

Hi there,

I am an enthusiast developer and a few months ago I started this game project on my own, a project that I hold very dear. I hope to finish the first version of it in a bit less than an year (right now I work alone on it), and now I am in need of your help for the graphics.
Please download the attachment and take a look at the brief information. If you have any questions, just let me know.
This is my first time posting a project on freelancer, so let me know if I should provide more information on some aspect I've overlooked.

I am looking forward for your input!

Cheers!
Florin

Later edit.
It seems somehow I omitted one gif from the brief, right after this phrase
"I am attaching a gif file of the editor and how the sample tiles can be manipulated to give a bit of feel."
Sorry for that, I attached it here.

The content has to be original work, not very similar with existing artwork.
Please also take a look at the public clarification board. I also offered some details there.

Later edit 2

Hi there,

I have added a few hand written notes to show roughly what the graphics should look like.

The grid size is 16x16 pixels for the base tiles, BUT the tiles can be any size. As you can see in the hand-draw, I drew some tiles longer and they overlap others, so you HAVE THAT FREEDOM! Please, use it!! :)

The general feel is serious, dark and cozy. Please see the "Brief V3.png" and forgive my drawing skills.

I hope this makes it even more clear.

Don't forget to read the other brief for the requirements (multiple tile-sets!!)

    [... continued]
Igor also sent a very professional design that definitely shows great talent, unfortunately is a bit away from the style than I am looking for.
Not the least, thank you Marwan for your effort, you got very close and it looks like you are easy to adapt to requirements that may be a bit outside the regular design. :)

I also would like to thank the others and apologize that I cannot extend this contest.

    Godspeed!

thank you too , it was fun to work on your project , but i am agree with david , structure the tilesets are too easier than make them , no offence but this s seem to be just an invest of money and tricky way cuz , you asked for making tileset wich s we gona give to you to make the map , and not have an already maked tileset and just structure the map with it . it s a bit unfair .anyway i enjoyed making it and i have got a good experience with your project

    Hi everybody!

First of all, thank you for your submissions and the time you invested. Each of the submissions that I actually got to see was interesting in some way or the other and I did appreciate more the projects that were clearly worked and re-worked showing clear professionalism.

While there were some very good candidates, one of the exposed projects showed exactly what I wanted. Given also that it was worked in a clever way that I had not thought of, in a very short time-frame to a complete design with basically no extra input on my part, and to an increased level of detail, it was clear I had the winner.

I also want to thank David for his extensive tile work and some nice clever twists of design.
Also, Shiyamek for his very nice robots that I am sorry I won't be able to use, but I prefer to have one single person for all the pixelart.

Hi Florin! I am a bit late for the party, but that's no problem for me. I read your brief(s) and I have only one thing that I need to ask: Are you looking for a specific palette size? Because if you do, the shading method you propose will certainly mess up the colors in production, because the pixel art shading also shifts the hue a bit to blue.

Hi there. No, I'm open for proposals here. Not sure if a specific palette size matters as long as the feel is similar to what I attached to Brief V3.png. ;)

Hi Omar. Unfortunately that is not the style I want. It is well animated and nicely drawn, but outside the brief. Sorry.

Hi Alonso. Yes, please take a close look at Brief V3.png. That one describes the best the style that I am looking for, for this game. Thanks for participating!

sir i have few questions to get a better understanding of what you want your game to be like:

-three games you've played before that you want us to get close to in terms of atmosphere (not necessarily pixel art games).

-what is the strongest element in your game besides sci-fi (horror, comedy, war, neon futuristic).

      Hi,

      Well, those could be:

      Alien Isolation
      Eve Online, and
      Firewatch

Besides SciFi, it should be the RPG element.

The game is a SciFi space trading RPG in an open world following a mysterious storyline that develops as you play.

      Hello!

The deliverables for this project include all tilesets described in the brief including the two characters, but for the purpose of awarding the project it is sufficient to show a mock with tiles for the ship/stations and the "robotic" character.
Please take a look at the brief I have uploaded recently as well as the other files, I have detailed all requirements, style and rough look of the graphics there.

      Thanks for participating!

Hi Omar. I have updated the description and added an important brief file. Basically the grid I am using is 16x16, but the tiles are free to design, they can be bigger or have different shapes, please take a look at the updated.

Great to hear that, don't worry about the timeline, I'm way ahead of the initial schedule, so if you show me something really nice, there's plenty of time. ;)

Fair enough. The minimum I would like to see could be:
      - a tile-set with sprites that can form a spaceship/space station interior- able to have different rooms, tech on walls, doors, maybe some transparent stuff;

      - a tile-set with a human character 16 pixels tall and a robotic one, 24 characters tall. They can be a few pixels taller, but maintain a general difference of height between them. All walking animations N, S, E, W. Just walking, nothing else.

Maybe to give a bit of inspiration:

The ship is a cargo-ship, a small one, poorly taken care of, with utilities to load stuff onto it, 20-25 years old assembled in space. It has utility rooms, futuristic bathrooms, and one level above, some living quarters with large windows.

The human character should be a regular person, with some sort of uniform. Just go wild there.
The synthetic is a third generation of utility droids, started from planetary drones aimed for fast travel/scientific and survey operations.
This third generation is able to host digitized consciousnesses as host and act as social individuals. Two arms, two legs, but build over a strong chassis.
They are also very tall and with no apparent facial features. They should be somehow able to run very fast over rocky terrain, resist a wide range of temperatures and are quite strong. Go wild here too. ;)
