Contest Brief

I am preparing a presentation that will be used in sales and marketing. The presentation will contain three separate illustrations that depict various aspects of the gene expression technology that we are offering to customers.

The first illustration will show the inside of a bacterial cell and the flow of proteins as they are being produced and transported to the periplasmic space. It must be obvious that this is a bacterial cell (so it must contain some bacterial features that is recognizable). The cytoplasm and the periplasm must be clearly shown and marked. Inside the cytoplasm, there will be one or more plasmids shown, from which a cytoplasmic pool of proteins are formed (an arrow from the plasmid to this pool of proteins may be suitable). Then there will be a second pool of plasmids in the periplasm, indicating that transport of proteins from the cytoplasm to the periplasm takes place. The flow of proteins, from the plasmid to a cytoplasmic pool and to a periplasmic pool can be indicated using arrows.

The second illustration will depict an annotated plasmid. The plasmid should be shown in such detail that it is obviously a circular DNA molecule. The annotation will be comprised of blocks and arrows and text that either overlaps with the DNA or is shown immediately below or over the DNA strands.

And the third illustration will display a directed evolution method for generating new expression vectors. We can come back to the details of this at a later stage.

This is technical illustrations with high demand for accuracy, but they also need to be visually appealing. Some understanding of molecular biology will definitely be of help. Designers with portfolios that includes similar illustrations will be preferred.

Employer Feedback

“Very beautiful illustrations, very receptive to suggestions, worked hard. I couldn't be happier. I have already hired Sergio to additional work.”

Some more comments based on the contributions:

What is important that the transport of proteins from the cytoplasm to the periplasm is immediately obvious to viewers. They shouldn't have to search within the figure to understand what its purpose is.

I prefer artistic to "cartoonish" illustrations.

The color scheme isn't that important. I can adjust the presentation to the illustrations :)

Hi there! I am a graduated medical school student and I am working in a gene therapy laboratory now. Your project seems very similar to some of the illustrations I have drawn before, which I showed in my portfolio. Could you tell me more about your project?

Thank you! I am working on the first and the second illustrations now! But I am a little confused about the DNA annotations. Can I mark the annotations to a specific segment of DNA or you want something else?

As a veterinary student ( studied microbiology, biomolecular biology and fisiology) im confident to provide what you need but to fit the same style that your company has, could i ask for some insight on wich images i can base the work on?

Good point. We don't really have much images to base it on, so I will delete this part form the context description. Thanks.
