The term brand is mostly used in business and therefore it becomes significant to comprehend the underlying meaning of the term. When the term is used, it automatically relates to a product or service having a specific genesis. In this context, the term trademark can be used in place of the term brand without much difference.
In olden times, cattle owners use to brand their cattle for better identification, suggesting that branding is used to determine the origin of any product or service. In contemporary times, however, the concept of branding has not changed much. Corporations prefer to brand their items so that they bear an identity and are not lost among other products of other companies. Therefore, in order to distinguish between products, branding is important.
As far as the definition of the word brand is concerned, it is better to say that it is the non-generic name for a product that aids us to know the source of the product. Brand names are used to identify the company brands. Apparently it would appear that there is no difference between a company, product and its brand name. For instance selling a detergent under the brand name of say Tide is the same as selling the Tide brand of the laundry detergent. But from the marketing perspective, it needs to be understood that there lies a great difference between brands and brand names.
