What makes us feel prideful and short-changed sometimes?
Most of us we have no issue when we’re doing better than everybody else, in fact, we feel heroic and prideful, but on the other hand, when others are doing better than us, we feel empty, mediocre and shortchanged. What makes us feel this way? It is not what they have that gives us this animus feeling, it is what we have in comparison to what they have, in fact this is what makes us indignant. For instance, in a village crowded with grass houses, the man with a wooden house feels like the king, after all, he is the only who has a wooden house. Similarly, the same man in the village where everybody has a stoned house, this man will feel shortchanged and yet nothing changed, he has the same house, in the same village and in the exact place, but he feels bad about his situation. This can be explained by the theory of relative deprivation, which suggest that we tend to measure how well or deprived we are by comparing ourselves with other people around us. In other words, our self-assessment is not based on our standing in the world, but in our immediate circles, those we are in the same boat with.
