We are looking for design of a circuit which will return a value between 0 and 5v DC which corresponds to the resistance of liquid(milk). The circuit has source voltage of 5vDC and can be designed to output a PWM signal if needed. The probes are stainless steel spaced 1cm apart and will be used in apparatus to measure the milk flow coming from cows on dairy facilities. For this reason several electrical characteristics must be taken into account. Cows are very sensitive to stray current so research will need to be conducted to ensure that the circuit measuring the flow of milk will not produce voltage or current that could harm the cow. We would like the components to be simple and affordable as it will effect the base cost of the unit we are developing. Schematics will need to be provided as well as a description of how the circuit will work. In summary: a. Measure conductivity(resistance) of milk b. Do so without harm to the animal c. Circuit will return a value between 0-5vDC - This range will correspond to a resistance reading between 0 and 5k ohms d. Source voltage on circuit cannot exceed 5vDC - We can provide a PWM signal if needed e. Design needs to be simple and affordable f. Probes on metering device is 1cm apart and stainless steel g. Voltage used to measure cannot be DC as this will corrode the probes in liquid e. Schematics and description of operation must be submitted f. We are already using a microcontroller which will read the input of the circuit provided.

Hi, As an electrical functional and ICT test machines designer this is a simple job. If you want I can provide schematic, microcontroller SW and PCB design too. Just I have a question, at which accuracy do you want the result ? A 10 bit level (1000 values) is enough ? B.R. Zoltan

Hello, I am a practicing Electronics Engineer with over 10+ experience with analog sensor and signal circuit design primarily in the Aerospace industry. I propose that passive resistance measurement would be achieved by a simple Wheatstone bridge circuit. This circuit can be implemented without use of an additional microprocessor. One leg of the the resistance bridge would be that of the liquid (milk) probe. Changing the resistance unbalances the bridge resulting in a differential voltage output change. Unknown resistance of the liquid (milk) can thus be inferred by knowing the resistance of the other bridge legs. A difference or instrumentation amplifier would serve as an interface between the bridge and your microprocessor. I can easily provide schematics, a low cost PCB and theory of operation. If you can, please provide details on the liquid probe and microprocessor connector interface. Cost Breakdown: $75 = cost of qty 3 3.8 x 2.5 inch PCBs $75 = parts Best Regards

You give 50% PWM on resistor devider sch(and inverting signal to other side of devider) and measure the voltage with differential amplifier. That's idea for free. For working prototype - 50$.

I'm an electronics hobbyist. I'm rather good in this kind of analog circuit. to avoid harming cows an insulation have to be made between the circuit and the stainless steel electrodes and / or between the circuit and your analog input. if your microcontroller board is powered by a grounded switching power supply, your inputs might inject unwanted high frequency pulses. To avoid this, an optical coupling may be necessary or an insulation transformer between the probes and the circuit. the transformer gives another advantage : it guaranties that the output AC signal will be exactly symetrical, avoiding corrosion. So depending on your power supply technology (switching or serial regulated, grounded or not) the implementation will be different.

Hi there! Don't get me wrong, it's just a dummy bid. You can get a lot more information about milk if you use AD5933 to measure complex impedance at some frequencies, not only DC.
