Advertisement for festival guide -- 5.5 x 8.5 - plus derivative works

This is a generalized conceptual memo for you to consider. I’d like to see a mock-up, for which I can pay you. I am soliciting other concepts from other designers, so that you know, and will select the best design. The play, “Porn Rock”, is a re-staging of the 1985 Senate Committee hearings. At these hearings, a group called the Parent’s Music Resource Center (PMRC) presented a series of rock album covers, rock music videos, and recited outrageously filthy and pornographic lyrics. The intent was to show that parents might not know what was on the records their kids were purchasing, so the PMRC wanted a warning sticker on the albums. This was opposed by musicians like Frank Zappa, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, and John Denver, who testified at the hearings. The testimony was harsh, satirical and biting in place, although Denver was very respectful. The design should reflect the major themes of the play and the hearings. These might include the following, although not all are required. • Rock music, instruments, musical notes • The people involved - you may want to pull images from here: • The Constitution • The First Amendment • Restriction of speech • Record albums • S&M imagery, leather outfits, studs, chains, handcuffs, etc. • Hysterical parents • “Offensive words” One notion might be the logline across the top: In 1985, the US Senate tried to censor rock n’ roll. Bad idea. PORN ROCK Perhaps have the “O” in each word being the loops of a set of handcuffs, linked by a chain? The color scheme should not be subtle. It should stand out. The poster colors should grab people’s attention as they drive down the street, and the same colors for the ad in the guide should leap out.
