My project is to design and develop a desktop and mobile software application and its database system. The system is used for logging outdoor activity. The mobile application allows the user to collect data using the mobile device functions such as picture image, location data, etc. This data is stored into the device and the extra text data such as comments can be added by the user, and then the data will be sent into the desktop application via the Internet. The desktop application allows the user to manage and store the data into the database. The stored data can be modified by the user on a PC, and sent back into the mobile device again. The mobile device displays the map and indicates the target location which is calculated by previously stored data and current location data.

Here is an example usage of the outdoor logging system. When the user finds some edible fruits, mushrooms, shellfish or good fishing points in the outdoors, if there are some land marks, it is easy to remember the location. However, this case is quite rare in the bush, mountains, rocks, beach and far out at sea. In many cases, there is a high possibility of collecting the same natural products in the same place in the next time or season. In these situations, this application is very useful. The user takes a target picture and adds comments if necessary, and then sends the data into the user’s PC to store the location data into the database system. Next time the user wants to go to that place they retrieve the data from the PC and send the data back into the mobile device. The mobile device will indicate the target location on the map; therefore the user can find the target location easily. This is only one example usage of the system. This system can be very useful for any situations where the location needs to be remembered because the user wants to go back to the same place later. This system development would require almost all knowledge I mentioned above; project management, research skills, application design and development, database design and development, data transaction via Internet, communication with developers’ community, etc. Thus, I believe this is suitable for my project.
