At [login to view URL], we are on a mission to help you understand news better, understand the genesis of an issue and present before you various conversations happening around the same so that you can develop an opinion of your own. An important point here is that - though we do news, we are not competing with the news sites. Our primary aim is to help people preparing for competitive exams whose major component is current affairs/GK. These students will generally refer to our site for making notes and to get the most relevant news. (this is how the behavior of our customer differs from casual news readers) The design problem in front of you is very interesting. So far we've 2 different pages for a specific issue. 1. The story pages - [login to view URL] It tries to capture the following a. All the recent articles/op-eds from reputed newspapers(original link of the newspaper quoted) - giving in depth knowledge about what eminent personalities think of the specific issue. b. The commenting engine where meaningful conversations happen. 2. The explainer pages - [login to view URL] a. This page tries to explain the issue in depth. Giving its history, major milestones, etc. As shown it can have various sub-sections each having a paragraph. As newspaper articles/op-eds assume that the history of the issue is already known and they cover the most recent happenings, this might be difficult for the reader to understand/put in context. The design problem at hand is to merge the blog page within the story page preserving both 1a,1b and 2a elements. Judged on 1. Getting the best fonts. 2. Best layout. 3. Keeping data driven approach. - First time readers on an issue will prefer 2a. But returning readers will prefer 1a. hence both have to be given equal weightage. - Try avoiding using tabs for 1a and 2a as data behind the tabs stays hidden. - Looking for more innovative approaches for 2a rather than simple single column layout with one sub-section after the other. Design Pattern References 1. NYT Comment Box is a slider [login to view URL] 2. Tablo story pages in the middle [login to view URL] 3. [login to view URL] : probably not applicable in our case because we are mostly focusing on the story page.
