Project Description

I have written a children's book meant to inspire young black girls in South Africa to become leaders and to show them that their natural features are beautiful. There is a social issue in South Africa where black girls try to mimic the appearance of white girls for that is what they perceive as beauty. Personally I believe that this stems from early childhood where the big companies such as Barbie and Disney were mostly focussed on the white population and thus set standards in the eyes of many young girls. There is also the issue of leadership where girls easily step into more submissive roles despite the fact that they have good leadership skills.

The book is about a blacksmith's daughter who wants to follow in her father's footsteps to his despair. He wants her to be more like her mother who was a very ladylike woman. The prince of the story is against war and is constantly seen as a disappointment by his father who wants a headstrong son to brawl with. Believing his eldest son is not fit for the throne he tries to get rid of him so that his younger "more suitable" son can step up as the next king. In a series of unfortunate events the blacksmith's daughter and the prince meets after he has been cursed and became unable to travel back to his family.
