If you will decide to use webmin/virtualmin then I recommand AMI distribution which is Amazon modified distribution comes from redhat/centos.. it contains amazon tools or Ubuntu. if you will decide to use WHM/Cpanel then I recommend CentOS which is free.. the other options are RedHat and CloudLinux. 1. text editor 2. time based job scheduler 3. cmd to copy files/folders 4. Hi, Please see answers below: 1, what is vi - vi is a text file editor 2, what is cron - cron is the service that runs tasks on a scheduled basis 3, what is cp - cp copies files/folders 4,what is bind - bind is the dns service I can set up virtualmin for you and configure it properly. In addition I will set up basic hardening and recommend a backup plan. I recommend amazon linux because it basically a redhat clone but is constantly supported, patched and updated. It is also optimized to run on amazon ec2. One problem you will encounter is not being able to send mail properly. This is because of the way amazon handle the IPs/reverse DNS. The only way to bypass this problem would be to use the amazon smtp services which I believe involves additional costs. Please let me know if you interested or if you have any questions Thanks

What is your recommended system for EC2 and why ? I recommend redhat if you are ready to purchase the license, else I prefer the CentOS. Theoretically the CentOS is more stable and better hardware support. 1, what is vi It's the programmers text editor, it is the default text editor that comes with most Linux/Unix machines. 2, what is cron Cron is the daemon to to execute schedules commands.
