I have much experience in Android&iphone and made many apps. - I have much experience in app associating with its back-end. I think your app is just this style. App can send its location to back-end web part. Back-end will analyze locations of each devices. When the app request distance, back end will calculate and retrieve distance by locations of device. - I can also manage back-end web part. It is not a problem to geolocate iPhones and measure distance between them. There is already iOS Core Location Framework that uses the best method to locate user as app defines granularity.
