Behavioral Tracking Tool - Persistent Cookie or Tracking Beacon

I want to build a very simple behavioral tracking tool that installs persistent cookies on a users browser when they visit our website and then allows us to gather information about that users online habits and behavior. It can be very simple. Returning history of sites visited and search queries is sufficient. We will then use these insights to dynamically personalize the website when the customer returns in the future. You do not need to do anything with this process, just build the tracking tool that can deliver the data to us. Please contact me if you have any experience in this area!
