[EXCERPT] By all means, this is no short, sharp death to the smoker. Cancer, building up over several years; emphysema over decades; and a stable reliance, a sole desire that accumulates almost instantly. These developing illnesses (which, in many cases can be cured over a few years from the date of quitting) have proven to result not only in 10-15 years of robbed life, but the 10 years prior to the smoker's expected death are spent in pain, agony and often regret, this creates the perception that the smoker is much older than s/he may claim.
Short-term, smoking seems quite the desirable habit; lowered appetite – subsequently resulting in weight-loss; short relaxation periods where the smoker feels they've cured any and all cravings, though habit would suggest not for long. Many smokers, particularly a few generations ago, began to smoke because it was the 'cool' thing to do. The average 'heavy smoker' will spend an estimated $5,000+ on cigarettes, around $2,000 of this is tax (over %50 of cigarette prices in New York City is local + government taxes). Now, all of a sudden, you remember your parents, grandparents or even great grandparents telling you how a pack of smokes 'back in the day' would cost a few cents, and you'd even get a free light and/or matches – what has that empathetic world become? Wait... anti-cigarettes, right... Good! I'm glad the taxes are there, well, not really – though, statistics, once again, would prove this; in the U.K. Alone smokers are declining at 0.4% PA, doesn't seem like much? A life is a life and that still equates to 114,000 deaths a year in the U.K. [CONTINUES...]
