You are the only data scientist for your company. The company, ACME RoadRunner Drops (ARD) manages a popular set of chain stores in many categories. They are in restaurants, groceries, beauty & spas, and health & medical, to mention a few. While you are the only data scientist in your company, you happen to know a few other data scientists from you training at the Leeds School of Business. You may ask their help with very specific how-to questions related to Alteryx, and you may answer questions posed by others, but ONLY in the #projecthelp channel on Slack.
When someone helps you or posts useful information, give them Karma, which we will use to assign participation scores in class. Do this by writing the following in Slack:
@Anna Bergstrom, TA++ For being awesome (replace Anna with the name of the person getting Karma points and don’t forget to add a text about why they are awesome)
You have been asked by the CEO to propose a generalizable process for using product review data to create a strategy for improving sales in an ARD category. This means that you should pick a specific store type and analyze the available data on products in that category to help the company understand how to be more successful (you determine and argue for the measure of success).
Brilliantly, some enterprising data scientists scraped a lot of data from Amazon. [login to view URL]
Examine the data to develop a strategy for improving store performance. Be aware that the data is in a very difficult-to-access format called JSON. Google will be your friend.
Write a one-page executive memo with an appendix explaining your analysis. This executive memo will be read by the CEO, who does not know Alteryx nor data science. Write accordingly. If you find yourself writing: “And after the Summarize tool we used the Transpose tool to…” you are probably flirting with an F (for Firing).
Note: in real life, there is no one right way to do this analysis. Use the data to develop an internal argument for a strategy that will improve your company’s bottom line. Argue persuasively, write tightly, and build on your data analysis in the memo. The quality and persuasiveness of the memo will drive your grade.
No restrictions on Alteryx tools used, but the whole analysis has to take place within Alteryx, and you should turn in a .yxmd file with your workflow and extensive use of the Comment tool. When we hook your workflow up to the files on the [login to view URL] site, it should work perfectly.
