It's tough to choose a favourite, yet I shall talk about Taxi Driver. Martin Scorsese directed it, while Robert De Niro plays the role of the protagonist. The film follows around a young man, Travis who lives in NYC. A discharged US Marine, he takes up the job of driving passengers around the city throughout the night. Travis is disgusted at the "scum" of the city. The literal dirt and the criminals, violence and child prostitutes disgust him. He takes on the job of "cleaning" the city on to himself and decides to murder Palantine, the politician. However he fails to. Instead, he shoots criminals in the local brothel and is hailed as a local hero. What makes this movie my favourite is the depiction of all-consuming loneliness, social isolation, delusions and disenchantment. One of the most famous movie scenes include Travis talking to himself in the mirror: "You talkin' to me?" The film ends on a rather emotional note: did Travis really shoot the criminals in the brothel? Or was it one of his many delusions? I would definitely consider Taxi Driver a must watch.
