A congress was held to discuss the impacts of digital currency in Europe. There were several considerations some being, the citizens’ protection, who will be responsible for the costs, whether interests and limits should be put. They also tried to figure out if there is really a motivation for using digital currency. If there is, what should its design look like and how will it be implemented, considering the current payment system is still working well. It was then concluded that there are so many questions to be answered and analyzed before coming to any conclusion.

The European Central Bank(ECB) has confirmed its past and current works combined with practical experiments on digital Euro on the Global Blockchain Congress conducted in Malaga, Spain where many regulators had gathered to discuss technologies in DLT and stablecoins. The ECB is exploring wholesale and retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CDBC) with later being a more complicated case. ECB is facing a lack of motivation for retail CDBC as payment systems are efficient and cash transactions still exist. Even though currently the world is not ready for an Universal digital currency system owing to the loopholes in technology, Central banks all over the world are working towards digital currency and its technologies and experimenting with its uses in contrast to cash transactions. Despite being quiet in its progress towards CDBC, ECB has a great potential to change as the financial sector is changing. Digital currency will be the future if it can prevail over associated risk.

There were talks about how anti-money laundering requirements could be fulfilled by CBDC. In a nutshell, a Digital Euro will soon be a reality, if its benefits overpower associated risks.
