In 2011, the construction business had a downturn and Jonathan decided to channel his creative abilities to the food business creating Pirate Jonny’s Caribbean Rubs, Seasonings & Sauces. His expertise as an arborist and designer enabled him to produce high quality products being MSG, Gluten Free, Low sodium with no Preservatives to both retail and food service clients. The line is representative of “Floribbean” flavors that have won local and National Awards such as the National BBQ Association, Scovie Awards, Local Hot Pepper Festival, Supermarket Guru award, World Hot Sauce award-Louisiana, Kissimmee Kowtown festival award for Sauces and many more.
Pirate Jonny’s needed a State Certified Commercial Kitchen in order to produce for Retail outlets and Food service, so hence the opportunity to have a shared commercial kitchen for both Pirate Jonny’s and other small businesses who also wanted to bring their products to market. My RentaKitchen serves as the outlet for a small business creations in Florida.
Since Pirate Jonny’s had the commercial equipment to produce the rubs and seasonings, Jonathan decided also to form another business to assist others, named, Spice CoPack.
All of these businesses support each other as well as small business in the community. As well, the City of Clearwater has been a tremendous help to Pirate Jonny’s in the support they have provided. Terra Construction does huge architectural design projects, they were bidding on the 275 corridor from 60 to downtown
Moved from Kennedy location to CLW about 10 years ago
Pirate Johnny rubs were just a hobby until a friend suggested they enter a contest- they won and began a new company which through the recession kept Terra a float
They grew it from markets and national contests
Had it in a bunch of national retailers Publix, Sprouts, Winn Dixie, Luckys, and more- scaled back and now just in Whole Foods, Ace, and some specialty stores
Rubs evolved into sauces, sauces evolved into a commercial kitchen, evolved into making the kitchen a commissary supporting small food service ideas, which evolved into a Co-packing business for some other products around the nation and canada
Focus is now continuing to develop the commercial/commissary kitchen- scale back on Pirate Johnny- it will still be available, but online and a few retailers. It is more costly and time intensive than it is worth dealing with big distributors and national marketing
