Herbs of the Peruvian Amazon
The use of plants and herbs to treat human maladies dates back for thousands of years. Herbalism is the original form of medicine.
It is truly a mystery how the ancients were able to discover the myriad uses of plants to treat human maladies. Did they experiment by ingesting plants themselves or was there some mysterious channel of communication that existed between plants and humans that imparted this knowledge? How did the ancients develop the understanding of which parts to use, how to prepare them, and which illnesses to use them for?
However this knowledge was derived, there is a time-honored tradition for the use of herbal remedies in Peru and all of South America. In this article, I’ll take a brief look at three medicinal plants native to the Amazon region of Peru, and discuss their uses.
