I am the executive editor of the Pegasus Review, a new medical literary journal out of Stanford University in California. Our journal publishes creative writing on healing, sickness, medical training, and medical culture. Our title references The Paris Review, the famous literary publication, and the Pegasus physician-authors, a group of some 100 writers who have conducted readings at Stanford for the last 10 years. Our editorial staff consists mainly of Pegasus members, and our advisory board includes Michael Berkwits (deputy editor at JAMA) and Abraham Verghese (Vice Chair of Medicine and best-selling novelist).
As we plan our launch (in mid-to-late 2018), we are seeking a graphic designer and web developer to help build our platform from the ground up. Our publication’s visual aesthetic should reflect its editorial voice. As such, our ideal designer is someone who shares our passion for crafting beautiful stories out of the experience of sickness and healing. That said, we prize professionalism and design skill above all else.
The job entails
- helping to shape our visual aesthetic. (We have strong opinions, and we welcome a designer who does too.)
- building a beautiful online platform for our publication, with a gripping front page, fluid story layouts, thoughtful lead pages for individual sections (e.g., fiction, poetry, opinion, etc), and creative tools for navigating between pages
- integrating our literary art with visual art (curated by our art director, Sam Rodrigues)
- consulting on promotional material (e.g., flyers, splashpages)
- teaching our staff to manage the site’s content, so that we can upload new content for subsequent editions. And potentially doing limited troubleshooting during these bi-annual/quarterly uploads
- talking us through back-end design issues like adware interoperability and SEO friendliness.
- finally, laying the groundwork for a smooth transition to print—a move we are planning in the next 1-2 years.
If you are excited about medical storytelling, or simply excited to add a unique new project to your design resume, please contact me at stematt@stanford.edu. Please include a few sentences outlining your experience and your interest in our project. From there, we can talk in greater detail about the Pegasus Review’s aesthetic and literary goals, and the next steps for our collaboration.
