I have an odd request, since what I need is for someone to find out if a file I downloaded and installed caused all of my data to be stolen. Requirements for this project are that you'll need a Mac and a separate partition to test the program to see if it is in fact stealing data. It shouldn't take you long to figure it out by looking at the file as it is open source.
I wanted to play the game Path of Exile on my Mac. A developer released an open source of the project using WINE to be able to play on a Mac. I downloaded the file and installed it. Later, I find out it's not being developed anymore. This is the initial thread of what the program is that I downloaded: [url removed, login to view]
(NOTE: the yellow text, etc and link removal was not there until I informed the company. This was added later today after I informed them of this issue,)
The file I downloaded exactly is here: [url removed, login to view]
When I installed it, it has the standard PoE download, however, I noticed that it was also uploading a lot as well. After some time, I stopped it and checked Package Content of the file. I notice I had shortcuts to my User folder. I also checked logs but only saw "Download" there, but the User folder and the upcoming issue about data upload.
The data upload in Activity Monitor showed a high amount of data being moved upstream. I'm not sure if the program is P2P, but I am concerned my local files were being uploaded.
My main question is this: was running this program and running it causing my data to be uploaded to a remote server stealing my local User file or anything else locally from my computer?
Please check the file's code and install on a separate clean partition and see if my data has been compromised by installing the program and see if it is moving files.
Any questions I can answer, please let me know.
