Hello we could use available on market ultrasonic range sensors connected to small arduino board. Power source will be li-po battery that will be able to charge using micro usb cable. Device will work few days on one charge. Data could be stored on flashcard, internal memory or sent wireless using Bluetooth or radio link to PC. If you don't need to store measurement range I could use beeper to signal if smth detected in presetted range.
