HI, I'd do this using SignalR, which actually uses a chat application as an example - though I'll not be using their example. I've not used signalR in this way (other than their example) but have extensive experience on a non-freelancer project where I built licensing around it. The main benefit would be that it handles handshaking and polling between the server and client(s) and if you wanted to send messages between clients or from server to clients this would be fairly simple to add at a later stage. (and it's pretty much instantaneous).
