OpenCart: two way feed. To update the store and the external database

We are building a multistore via Opencart for 2 stores. The 2 stores will be build by ourselfs and are not created yet. An external database is already created by someone else. The builders from this external database can provide us with a (XML?) feed if that's what we need for instance.
With this feed the connection to the store can be made so both stores can display products. The products which are shown on the frontend (product, price, images, etc) get their information from the external database. When a product is bought via one of the stores the stock will be changed, so the external database must be informed. When a product is altered (changed) in the store, the external database must be informed also (and updated). Vise versa: when a product is altered in the external database, the store must be informed (and updated). So these are two way updates.
