Importing Members from Simple Machines Forum to Joomla

I just started using a Forum board call Simple Machines middle of January this year and my member base as hit 1300 and growing.? I would like to now use Joomla to expand my site but at the same time keep my members so that they are able to login into Joomla using their same user name and password. Is this possible or what is needed to make this possible?? I dont want to develop the joomla site if I cant somehow carry the members over.? I will be putting this on [login to view URL] for someone to tackle, but if there is someone here who is able to do this, or has done this in the past, please let me know. I will export a portion the database to be used for testing.? If successfull, then the full importation can begin.?
