Looking for correct way to log a user into Chrome extension - and check that they are still logged in

I have a chrome extension i am building.

In it I am performing a basic authentication against an API (laravel Passport/Spark) to see whether the user is logged in, this API returns a JWT token which is getting stored in [login to view URL]

From the chrome extension i want to check if that user is logged in (does the token exist) and if so then show the logged in version of the code.

The issue i am hitting is that the page uses jquery, and it means the jquery is already loaded before the ajax call is fired to check the authentication. so the page stops working

I need the login system working properly to authenticate securely. and maintain the logged in state - as well as periodically checking that the login is still valid.

Google Chrome JavaScript jQuery / Prototype Laravel PHP
