Problem with memory back up on website

We have a customer with an online shop website - it keeps crashing . the customer has had to cancel auto backup, because the memory built up is too great, and it then brings the site down.

They have come back to us and said this ---
I have checked your VPS account and there doesn't seem to be backups running for it from our side.
I would suggest logging in via ssh to the VPS and installing "htop" then checking the memory usage. You can sort running processes by memory used within htop which will help you find the culprit.

I'll delete old website+database backup, remove un-necessary data manually. I need root shell access. Htop will only tell the process which slow down system. We can kill the process but removing old data is necessary More
