It must sound and be read as naturally as the original text, while conveying the message the author had in mind. I have been teaching English at University level for 15 years, and translating different kinds of documents for 13 years. I consider that so-called translators that charge extremely cheap are the ones that use some kind of software or automatic translators. For a local speaker of the language, it sounds terrible. I never use those translators. In fact, I usually look in encyclopedia and books related to the topic so I won't even use new terms, but the ones that might already be "standard" in that area.
