According to state officials, California regulators will vote on Thursday to implement a comprehensive plan to limit and eventually outlaw the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles. The state's governor referred to this decision as the beginning of the end for the internal combustion engine.
It is widely anticipated that the new regulation, which was unveiled in a news conference on Wednesday morning, will quicken the global shift toward electric vehicles. In addition to being the biggest auto market in the country, California also sets the example for other states to follow when establishing their own laws governing auto emissions.
The limitations would apply to nearly a third of the US auto market if those states follow through with their plans, and the majority are anticipated to adopt similar regulations.
