I run a WP Multisite. The main site is in English. Other subsites correspond to different language TLDs. For example: [login to view URL] - main site, [login to view URL], [login to view URL], [login to view URL] are other sites on the same multisite network.
All sites use the same theme (Genesis framework, Studiopress child theme, Gutenberg blocks), same structure, same images, same categories and tags etc.
My posts are simple in structure. Each post has a Title, Embedded video, Contact form, some shortcode, and then accordion that has a long transcript of the video. All in that corresponding order.
The only difference between subsites on the multisite is in translated post content in Title, URL, and Accordion.
At the moment I translate semi-manually:
I input Word file with original content into Google Translate, get it translated to language X. Then I copy-paste into each post three translated segments: post title, URL (= Title) and translated transcript text inside Accordion block. So the steps are:
(1) Copy a post title text from translated word file.
(2) Paste translated text into Post Title and URL fields inside WP Post editor.
(3) Copy translated post transcript from the word file.
(4) Paste translated transcript inside the code in the accordion block.
It’s fast, but I have to do that on each TLD, which adds up effort and time.
I need a custom plugin or some code that automates this process:
1/ Trigger: I create new post on the main site and put transcript in original language into accordion. I save new post as Draft or publish it.
2/ Script recognizes new post appearance and automatically makes calls to Google Translate API and translates Title, URL, Transcript text into all languages I specify.
3/ Script then creates posts with translated content (Title, URL, Transcript) inside subsites on my multisite network that correspond to relevant language TLD. Such posts can be left in draft form for me to review and publish manually, or they can be published automatically right away. The quality of automatic translation is OK with me.
I do not want to use any overloaded commercial plugins (such as WPML, Polylang, TranslatePress, etc). They are bloated.
They also cannot do what I want. Specifically, WPML creates “virtual sites” if you want to put each language into separate TLD, and you cannot access Google Translate API through WPML. Polylang does not allow access to Google API, and it’s outdated. TranslatePress does not allow to separate languages by TLD and does not allow backend automatic translation, although it does allow to access Google API.
I can provide my theme files. What should work with the theme and generic multisite install, should work with my multisite.
