I've implemented many Google Analytics sites, and have also used Universal Analytics in multiple sites as well. For starters, you can have BOTH GA and UA (new acct) running simultaneously. Alternatively, you can migrate your existing GA acct into UA. Note that there are limitations of UA, such as it doesn't support remarketing.
