Dear Sir/Madam, I am a Mechanical Engineering student and I have studied this book i.e., shigley's mechanical engineering for the courses of "Machine Design" 1 & 2. I have even designed a spring for Macpherson's strut as a semester project in which I was to do calculations for spring's stiffness, factor of saftey, diameter of the spring, material for the spring etc and I have a excellent grasp on designing springs, beams and trusses etc. I have seen the attached figure. Basically the legs are bearing axial loading so it is a truss while the frame is bearing bending load so legs and frame needs to be designed accordingly.
