Case Study – Video Rent OZ VideoRentOZ is a large chain of home entertainment rental over 100 stores distributed over all states in Australia. VideoRentOZ lends entertainment products such as movies, TV shows and games on either DVD or online downloading. Customers can rent products online via the web portal as well as from retail stores. The stores also sell drinks, candies, posters, second-hand DVDs, gift card and Prepay Cards etc. The revenue of the company is generated by rental fees, possible overdue fees (collected as part of returns), sales of products and gift cards. The gift cards and prepay cards can be used to rent or purchase items. Rental price may vary between sessions, promotion periods or special events. Every store has got a local operational database to keep: • The individual products on local store’s shelves and the online catalogue. Each store has roughly 90,000 individual products for in-store business. The following terms are used to distinguish between the different types of products: – Rental Item (game /movie/TV-program) refers to the actual DVD/URL-link for rent. – Catalogue Item refers to the Rental Item as it is purchased from the suppliers. Each movie is specified for a main category which may contain additional categories. Examples are: • Comedy (main), Characters, country, decade • Drama (main), Romance, Historical/Biographical • Action (main), Adventure, fiction, War, Martial arts • The Shining–Thriller (main), Crime, Horror • The Exorcist–Horror (main), Mystery, Religion, Drama – Sales Item refers to the secondary products sold in the stores, or candies, posters, blank disks, and so on. – Gift card is a cash card – PrePay Cards is rechargeable with its own ID The PrePay Cards transactions are different than pay cash/credit transaction. • Each time a video is rented, a certain amount (5% less than the regular rental price) is deducted from the card balance. • Customers can put more money on their cards with top-ups to increase the card amount by reloading. • A list of all customer data (name, address, phone number, Email and so on) captured when new customers register for a membership. • The database files for products rental and products sold Each store’s business is generating the following revenue streams: • Video Rentals – local stores or online • Returns (overdue fees) • Second-hand unit and Sales Item sales. • Gift cards & PrePay Card sales • Videos can be obtained by the Internet or directly requested at a local store. • Second-hand unit and Sales Item sales are processed in local stores. Business related processes: • Customers can buy any Sales Item such as candies, posters, blank disks and the secondary videos/games in the stores, • A customers must register for a membership of VideoRentOZ with information such as name, address, Email and phone number either at the local store or from the online portal of VideoRentOZ. The system issues a unique member ID for new customers.
